How AI Is Changing the Way Retailers Research E-commerce Technology

Retail technology vendors are increasingly being evaluated before a buyer ever reaches their website.

AI tools can summarize categories, compare vendors, identify alternatives, surface reviews and help buyers build shortlists.

G2’s 2026 Buyer Behavior Report says more than 80% of surveyed software buyers had sourced recommendations from an AI chatbot in the prior two years, while evaluation has become the longest stage of the buying journey for 40% of buyers. Read G2’s 2026 buyer research.

Discovery is getting faster; evaluation is not

AI can compress early research. It cannot remove questions about implementation, integration, ROI, security, support and fit.

For e-commerce technology companies, the opportunity is to become easier to understand before the sales conversation and easier to validate during evaluation.

Your positioning has to survive synthesis

If your website, review profiles, customer stories and marketplace listings describe the company differently, an AI-generated summary may reproduce that ambiguity.

A consistent story should make four things clear: who the product is for, which retailer problem it solves, why the approach is different and what proof supports the claim.

Retail AI is also changing merchant expectations

Shopify reported in 2026 that AI-referred shoppers showed higher purchase intent and stronger conversion than organic-search visitors in its Q1 commerce data. See Shopify’s AI-search analysis. These are early signals, but they reinforce how quickly discovery behavior is changing.

Create content around evaluation questions

  • How does the product integrate?
  • What type of retailer is it best suited for?
  • What results have customers achieved?
  • What tradeoffs should buyers understand?
  • What does implementation require?
  • How does the product handle data, security and AI?

AI visibility is ultimately a clarity problem

Technical discoverability matters, but the strategic foundation is still positioning and proof. If buyers—or AI systems—cannot determine why your company belongs in the shortlist, more content alone will not solve the problem.
